Their 1984 follow-up widens the palette with banjo, acoustic strumming and apocalyptic imagery, while Gordon Gano’s sharp writing turns songs like Country Death Song and Jesus Walking On The Water into something eerie, funny and confrontational at once. The record helped define the band’s cult status and showed how abrasive alternative rock could still draw on folk traditions without losing bite.
