This Is the Sea is The Waterboys’ breakthrough masterpiece, the record where Mike Scott’s ambitious folk-rock vision became fully realised. Released in 1985, it pushed the band beyond their early sound into something larger, bolder and more elemental, mixing electric drive with Celtic lift, poetic imagery and an outsider’s sense of transcendence. The album’s centrepiece, The Whole of the Moon, became their signature song and one of the great anthems of the decade, while tracks such as Don’t Bang the Drum and Old England show the record’s scope and political bite. Widely regarded as a landmark of British and Irish-influenced rock, it remains the album that defined The Waterboys’ reputation.
