Issued in 1970, the record pushed beyond the band’s debut with a harsher, more experimental edge, driven by Iggy Pop’s confrontational delivery and the Spacemen-era swagger of the Asheton brothers. Its broken rhythms, ugly guitars and freeform saxophone helped lay crucial groundwork for punk and later noise rock, while songs such as T.V. Eye and Dirt became templates for raw, unvarnished attack. Widely regarded as one of rock’s most important early outlaw records, it captured a band inventing its own language in real time.
