It’s Only Rock ’N Roll is a confident late-period Rolling Stones album that refines their blues-rock bite without losing the loose swagger that defined them. Released in 1974, it was the first album after Mick Taylor’s departure and the last to feature drummer Charlie Watts as a co-writer on the title track, with production credited to the band and Glyn Johns. The record balances muscular riffs and tougher R&B covers with some of the Stones’ most durable mid-70s originals, including the title song and the expansive Time Waits for No One. Its mix of bite, melancholy and groove helped keep the Stones commercially vital through the decade.
