Octave is a strong late-period return from The Moody Blues, refining their signature blend of melodic rock, symphonic colour and soft-focus pop. Released in 1978, it marked the group’s first album after the departure of founding keyboardist Mike Pinder, with Patrick Moraz bringing a more contemporary sheen to the band’s familiar widescreen arrangements. Led by the driving “Steppin’ In a Slide Zone” and the reflective “Driftwood”, the record balances accessible songcraft with the progressive touches that defined their earlier work. It became one of the group’s most commercially successful 1970s albums and showed they could update their sound without losing identity.
