    About this album

Miles Davis’s Ascenseur Pour L’Échafaud is a landmark soundtrack and one of his most important late-1950s recordings. Cut in Paris in 1957 for Louis Malle’s noir film, the sessions are famous for Davis improvising to screen while working with French jazz musicians including Barney Wilen, René Urtreger, Pierre Michelot and Kenny Clarke. The result helped redefine film scoring with a brooding, understated mood that pointed towards modal jazz and the freer, more atmospheric language Miles would develop in the following years. Its spare trumpet lines and nocturnal tension have made it one of the great crossover jazz recordings of the era.
