Sunday at the Village Vanguard is one of the great live jazz albums, a landmark document of the Bill Evans Trio with Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian. Recorded at New York’s Village Vanguard in 1961, it turned the piano trio into a model of conversational interplay rather than soloist-plus-accompaniment. Evans’s harmonically rich piano, LaFaro’s fluid bass lines and Motian’s responsive drumming give standards such as ‘Gloria’s Step’, ‘Solar’ and ‘Alice in Wonderland’ an unusually open, searching quality. LaFaro’s death days later has only deepened the album’s historic weight, making it both a superb performance and an enduring memorial to a remarkable trio.
