Carney is one of Leon Russell’s strongest and most distinctive albums, combining Southern boogie, gospel uplift and piano-led rock with a darkly theatrical edge. Released in 1972, it shows Russell at the height of his early-70s powers, writing and performing with the swagger and wit that made him one of the era’s most original songwriters. The album includes one of his signature songs, Tight Rope, alongside the elegant This Masquerade, later widely covered by other artists.
