461 Ocean Boulevard marks Eric Clapton’s assured return after a difficult early-1970s period, turning personal recovery into one of his most accessible solo statements. Recorded in Florida and produced by Tom Dowd, the 1974 album trimmed back the excess of the era in favour of direct blues-rock, reggae inflections and a looser, more immediate feel. Its breakthrough came with a number one cover of Bob Marley’s I Shot the Sheriff, which helped introduce reggae to a wider rock audience while reaffirming Clapton’s taste for reinterpretation.
