The Basement Tapes is a landmark in Bob Dylan's catalogue and a defining document of his collaboration with The Band. Recorded largely in 1967 in and around the Woodstock area after Dylan's motorcycle accident, the songs circulated unofficially for years before this 1975 release brought the material into wider view. Its stripped-back, often playful performances helped reshape ideas of what rock songwriting could be, folding folk tradition, country wit and ragged studio experimentation into an influential whole.
