Blood Orange's new album "Freetown Sound" (2016) is difficult to assign to a specific genre. A little jazz, a little funk paired with R'n'B and lots of new wave and synthpop - with his predecessors "Coastal Grooves" (2011) and "Cupid Deluxe" (2013), he laid the foundations for his genre mix, which cannot be pigeonholed and can probably best be described as fusion pop.
Dev Hynes alias Blood Orange has always stood out from the sea of pop music. The Londoner has only just crossed the threshold of 30, but knows his way around this genre like no other. Since the beginning of his musical career, the singer has already tasted his way into many sub-genres of pop, from dance punk to singer-songwriter.
"Freetown Sound" is more or less the result of all this - the experience and talent of an artist who has finally found his true style.
As far as the choice of topics on his new album is concerned, Blood Orange decided to explore the question of his identity in a total of 17 songs. "Freetown Sound" is about his origins, life as a black man in the USA, freedom and autonomy.
There are also some guests on the record, except that, contrary to every marketing strategy, they are not named. Nevertheless, Nelly Furtado, Carly Rae Jepsen, Debbie Harry and a few other artists can be heard.
Rarely has an artist managed to combine different musical styles so accurately. With "Freetown Sound", Blood Orange begins a new chapter in pop music.
